On November 7, 2023, a former DOJ Senior Congressional Affairs Specialist and licensed attorney previously assigned to the Office of Justice Programs was sentenced to 3 months of probation with the condition that he perform 25 hours of community service and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment and forfeit $70,000 for conspiracy to make false statements to banks. George Higginbotham was sentenced in the District of Columbia. According to the factual statement in support of his guilty plea, from in or about April 2017 through in or about January 2018, Higginbotham, along with other co-conspirators, conspired to commit the offense of making false statements to a bank by misrepresenting the true source and purpose of transfers of tens of millions of dollars from foreign accounts to federally insured financial institutions in the United States. The investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Cyber Investigations Office and the FBI.
