On June 9, 2025, a former BOP Correctional Officer previously assigned to the United States Penitentiary Hazleton (USP Hazelton) in West Virginia, was sentenced to 16 months of incarceration, 1 year of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment following a guilty plea to one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Robert David Sims was sentenced in the Northern District of West Virginia. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, on or about March 21, 2019, Sims knowingly and intentionally assaulted an inmate housed at USP Hazleton resulting in serious bodily injuries. Specifically, Sim participated in the unprovoked assault by punching and kicking the inmate resulting in lacerations to the face, contusions throughout the body, fractured vertebrae, and internal bleeding. The investigation was conducted by the OIG's Washington Field Office.
