On January 2, 2025, a former BOP Correctional Officer previously assigned to the Federal Correctional Complex Coleman (FCC Coleman) in Sumterville, Florida, pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under the color of law. Miguel Hidalgo pleaded guilty in the Middle District of Florida. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, on or about August 31, 2022, Hidalgo, while acting under color of law, assaulted an inmate who was handcuffed, by striking the inmate multiple times in the face and chest area, kicking the inmate, and spitting on the inmate, which resulted in bodily injury to the inmate, thus willfully depriving the inmate of the right, secured and protected by the Constitution and laws of the United States, to not be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment by one acting under color of law. The investigation is being conducted by the OIG’s Miami Office.
