Federal Inmate and Visitor Sentenced in Scheme to Introduce Contraband into Prison Facility

On May 27, 2025, non-DOJ individual Janai Stephens was sentenced to 18 months of probation in the Middle District of Florida. According to the plea agreement, Stephens knowingly and willfully made a materially false statement to the Federal Bureau of Prisons that she did not have any tobacco products in her possession upon entering the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex. Stephens also knowingly and willingly provided or attempted to provide prohibited objects, namely tobacco cigarettes, to an inmate. The investigation was conducted jointly by the DEA’s Gainesville, Florida office and the OIG’s Miami Office.
