Civilian Indicted and Arrested for False Statements and Providing a Prohibited Object in a Prison

On June 3, 2024, a non-DOJ employee was arrested and charged with one count of making false statements and one count of providing prohibited objects in a prison. Janai Stephens was charged in the Middle District of Florida and arrested in Miami. According to the Indictment, on or about March 10, 2024, Stephens knowingly and willfully made a materially false, fictitious, and fraudulent statement to a BOP Officer, that she did not have any tobacco products in her possession upon entering Coleman Federal Correctional Complex; and knowingly provided and attempted to provide a prohibited object, namely tobacco cigarettes, to an inmate. The investigation is being conducted jointly by the OIG’s Miami Office and the DEA’s Gainesville, Florida Office.
