BOP Inmate Sentenced for Conspiracy to Commit Honest Services Wire Fraud and Conspiracy to Possess and Provide Prison Contraband

On November 14, 2024, an inmate previously incarcerated at the Metropolitan Correctional Center New York (MCC New York), in New York, was sentenced to 27 months of imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release for one count of conspiring to commit honest services wire fraud and one count of conspiring to possess and provide prison contraband. Starlin Nunez was sentenced in the Southern District of New York. According to the Indictment, public court filings and proceedings, and the evidence presented at trial, between in or about 2019 and in or about 2020, at least 10 inmates housed within MCC New York, including Nunez, paid nearly $80,000 in bribes to a Correctional Officer (CO) in exchange for the CO introducing large amounts of contraband, included drugs such as oxycodone, alprazolam, Suboxone, marijuana, and synthetic cannabinoids, dozens of cell phones, and cartons of cigarettes into MCC New York. Inmates, including Nunez, then sold much of the contraband to other inmates at a profit as part of a widespread illicit market within MCC New York. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s New York Office, CBP OPR, and the FBI.
