On February 27, 2025, a BOP Correctional Officer assigned to the Federal Correctional Institution Coleman Low, in Florida, pleaded guilty to one count of receipt of a bribe by a public official and one count of providing contraband to a federal prisoner in the Middle District of Florida. According to the factual statement in support of the guilty plea, Samuel Smith attempted to introduce 668.1 grams of marijuana and other substances containing approximately 90 grams of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concealed within his duty vest. The investigation revealed that Smith received $43,901 in bribery payments via CashApp from on or about August 6, 2023 through on or about September 3, 2024. During a voluntary interview, Smith admitted that he had smuggled in contraband for bribery payments. The investigation was conducted by the OIG’s Ocala Locale.
